Castel del Monte

Rising from the rolling Puglian hills like a crown of stone, Castel del Monte is one of Italy’s most striking and mysterious landmarks. Just a short drive from the villa, this perfectly symmetrical octagonal castle seems to glow gold in the afternoon sun, offering panoramic views of the countryside all the way to the sea.

Built in the 13th century by Emperor Frederick II, Castel del Monte is a masterpiece of medieval architecture and mathematical precision. Its unique design — eight sides, eight towers, and countless symbolic details — has fascinated historians for centuries. Some see it as a fortress, others as an astronomical observatory, and many as a monument to knowledge and power.

Today, this UNESCO World Heritage Site invites visitors to wander its echoing halls, climb its towers, and imagine the life of a ruler whose curiosity shaped one of Italy’s greatest architectural wonders..
